As our skin ages, the dermis gradually loses its major constituents: collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Collagen acts as the major supportive connective tissue in our skin; elastin allows our skin to stay firm and resist wrinkles; hyaluronic acid helps to trap water and add volume and shape to our skin Along with a trend toward living a longer, healthier life, more and more patients are looking to physicians to help them achieve a more youthful appearance. The skin's natural aging process can result in contour changes and the loss of dermal collagen. Soft tissue augmentation has become a popular means of addressing contour defects that result from aging, sun damage, trauma, scaring, or disease. Dozens of filling agents are currently in use. Dermal fillers are used for superficial contour irregularities and soft tissue augmentation. They are used to plump up fine lines, wrinkles, some scarring and augment the lips by restoring volume and definition. Dr. Stacy applies the selected filler into the problem area in a series of small injections. The procedure may cause mild discomfort which is limited by the use of a cooling machine and occasionally, regional blocks. Mild swelling and bruising (which varies by individual) can be expected and typically resolves within a few days. What are Dermal Fillers? Dermal fillers are substances that are injected just below the surface of the skin to fill in lines, wrinkles, and scars. Unlike face lifts that stretch the skin, fillers add volume for a more natural youthful contour. Fillers can also increase the fullness of the lips and lessen the downward slant of the corner of lips. The most common areas treated are the smile lines around the nose and mouth, fine lines above the mouth, frown lines between the eyes, and acne scars. How are injectable fillers used? Dr. Stacy injects the filler in a series of small injections. You can expect to be a little swollen, tender and possibly bruised for a short while afterwards. Abstaining from the use of anti-inflammatories (i.e. Aleve or Advil) for a period of one week prior will reduce bruising considerably. The treatment time can vary between 30 minutes to an hour. Do the injections hurt? The treatments cause mild discomfort and Dr. Stacy may numb the area with ice or an anesthetic cream. Some patients experience mild burning or stinging, which is normal and quickly resolves. How long does it last? Both fillers deliver similar results. Restylane is a “temporary” filler that typically lasts from 3 to 6 months. Radiesse is a “semi-permanent” filler that can last up to 3 years. What are the benefits of injectable filler treatment? Results are such that the lines and wrinkles are softened and facial depressions are filled. Lips can be plumped up and given more definition. The degree of correction is dependent on the patient’s wishes and the amount of product used. Results are also dependent on a patient’s skin type and facial structure, their life style and their own perception. What are the risks? Risks are generally limited to mild bruising and swelling. People with a history of cold sores may experience a recurrence after treatment, although this can be minimized by the use of antiviral medicines. Who is a candidate for Artefill, Elevess, Radiesse, or Restylane? Any person who wishes to minimize the aging process around the nose and mouth, with minimal down time is an appropriate candidate for dermal fillers. It can also be used in conjunction with Botox. What is the cost? The cost is determined at your complimentary consultation with Dr. Stacy. At this time your goals and wishes will be discussed and an individualized plan of treatment will be designed for you. There is a fixed price based on volume, which includes Dr. Stacy’s services. What is the recovery like? Dermal fillers generally require little or no recovery time. Most patients are able to resume normal activities the following day.
